Putting Wales at the forefront of radiography

Cardiff University’s School of Healthcare Sciences is putting Wales at the forefront of radiography advancement with the launch of a new radiography simulation and teaching suite at the Heath Park Campus.

Cardiff University reports the Diagnostic Radiography Image Viewing Environment Suite (DRIVE) was opened at an event attended by the President of the Society and College of Radiographers Sue Webb.

Speaking at the event, Sue Webb said “I am delighted to celebrate putting Wales on the map in terms of recognition for the excellence in radiography care offered within the country. This facility also provides opportunities for students to engage in the study of non-technical skills related to the ‘human factors’ such as communication, leadership and situational awareness. Research suggest this combination of high quality technical and non-technical skills is essential to ensuring the safety of patients.”

Realistic simulation suites provide an authentic but non-threatening environment in which to introduce students to the key clinical skills they will need while out in practice. They are a safe environment in which students can practise and develop both routine and complex skills, building their confidence so they are fully prepared for practice.

Professor David Whitaker, Interim Head of the School of Healthcare Sciences & Dean at Cardiff University, said “Simulation plays an important part in the education of radiography students. It is a safe way for them to practice clinical skills that are likely to be needed when in practice. The School of Healthcare Sciences has an abundance of simulation facilities and it is an integral part of our students learning.”

The new facility was funded by Health Education Improvement Wales (previously known as Workforce, Education and Development Services). It consists of a fully functional X-Ray room and CR unit, gifted as part of the All Wales digital radiography upgrade with Fujifilm, a mobile unit and C-Arm, and high spec PCs and software.

The software is also available for students to access whilst they are away from the learning and teaching facilities on mobile devices and the combination of these assets should improve student confidence and competence in preparation for clinical education.
